Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Fluoroscopy Guided Manual Lymphatic Drainage, also known as the Fill and Flush technique, was originally developed by Professor Belgrado MSc, PhD. Since 2013, it has been widely adopted in lymphoedema clinics worldwide, demonstrating consistently positive outcomes.
This specialised approach uses precise, gentle movements to guide lymphatic fluid into the lymphatic vessels and nodes (“fill”), before directing it towards areas of the lymphatic system that are functioning effectively (“flush”). The technique is exceptionally gentle and, when combined with other treatments such as compression therapy, can significantly improve the appearance, comfort, and overall feel of affected limbs or areas.
Fill and Flush MLD may also provide meaningful benefits for individuals in the palliative phase of their illness. Following a thorough assessment, this gentle therapy may help reduce swelling, improve comfort, and support overall wellbeing as part of a holistic, patient-centred approach to care.
Post Procedure Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Post Procedure Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised gentle therapy designed to support recovery following surgical and liposuction procedures, including those performed for Lipoedema and aesthetic body contouring.
Surgical procedures place significant demand on the lymphatic system and commonly results in swelling, bruising, discomfort, and areas of firmness or fibrosis. Post-operative MLD helps stimulate lymphatic flow, encouraging the movement of excess fluid away from treated areas and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.
Benefits of post procedure MLD may include:
- Reduced swelling and fluid build-up
- Improved comfort and reduced tightness
- Support for bruising resolution
- Reduced risk of fibrosis and tissue hardening
- Improved skin texture and contour
- Enhanced overall recovery
Treatment plans are tailored to the type of procedure performed, the areas treated, and the stage of healing. Sessions are adapted carefully to remain safe and comfortable, particularly in the early post-operative period.
Where appropriate, MLD is combined with compression advice, scar management strategies, and education to support optimal long-term outcomes. We also liaise with post-surgical guidelines provided by your surgeon to ensure care is aligned with your recovery plan.
Our approach is gentle, evidence-informed, and focused on supporting both physical recovery and confidence following surgery.
Compression Therapy
Compression therapy plays a vital role in the management of both lymphoedema and lipoedema. By providing gentle, consistent resistance to the natural stretch of the skin, compression helps limit fluid build-up and supports healthier lymphatic function.
There is a wide range of compression options available to suit individual needs and lifestyles. These include:
- Velcro compression wraps
- Circular-knit and made-to-measure garments
- Easy-to-apply options suitable for night-time use or gentle daytime support
All compression solutions are designed to promote the movement of fluid away from congested areas towards healthier lymphatic pathways through graduated levels of compression.
During your appointment, we will take precise measurements of the affected area and guide you through the most appropriate compression options, including garment type, fit, and available styles or colours. If a garment is available on prescription, we can also provide the necessary information to support a request via your GP, should you wish to pursue this route.
We also provide expert guidance on selecting the appropriate compression garments prior to your surgical or aesthetic procedure. Choosing the correct garment is an important step in supporting optimal outcomes, comfort, and recovery, and our team is here to ensure you are properly informed and confidently prepared before your procedure.
Kinesiology Taping (KT)
Kinesiology taping can be used as a stand-alone treatment or as a complement to other lymphatic therapies. It is particularly beneficial in areas where traditional compression can be difficult to apply, such as the head and neck, breast or chest wall, and trunk.
KT may also be helpful for:
- Mild lymphoedema affecting the feet and ankles
- Encouraging lymphatic flow
- Softening areas of fibrosis or scar tissue
This gentle, non-invasive treatment is designed to move with your body. The tape is flexible, comfortable, and shower-resistant, allowing you to continue daily activities without restriction. Application techniques and wear time are tailored to each individual’s needs.
Please note: a patch test must be carried out at least 24 hours prior to treatment to ensure suitability for your skin.
Scar Therapy
Following surgery or trauma, the body works to heal the affected area as close to its original state as possible. However, this process can sometimes result in scar tissue that restricts movement, causes discomfort, or affects the cosmetic appearance of the skin. These changes may also impact surrounding areas that do not appear directly connected to the original scar.
Using Restore Scar Therapy techniques, we support the gentle remodelling of tight or disrupted scar tissue. Treatment can help improve mobility, reduce discomfort and swelling, and enhance skin texture and appearance—regardless of whether the scar is recent or many years old.
We generally recommend beginning scar therapy no earlier than eight weeks after scar formation, allowing the tissue sufficient time to strengthen. If your scar is newer, we are happy to assess the area, discuss your concerns, and advise on the most appropriate timing for treatment.
Photobiomodulation (Low Level Laser Therapy – LLLT)
(Coming Soon)
Using the Handy Cure S device, we will soon be offering Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)—a gentle, non-invasive treatment designed to enhance micro-circulation in areas where oxygen supply may be reduced. By supporting improved cellular function, LLLT can help tissues work more efficiently and promote healing.
This therapy may also help to:
- Reduce pain and inflammation
- Improve symptoms associated with complex scarring
- Reduce fibrosis, resulting in scars that feel softer, lie flatter, and move more freely
Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT)
Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the gold-standard treatment approach for the management of lymphoedema. It is a comprehensive, multi-component programme designed to reduce swelling, improve skin health, and support long-term self-management.
CDT typically combines several elements, which may include:
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
- Compression therapy (bandaging, wraps, or garments)
- Skin care to reduce the risk of infection, including cellulitis
- Exercise and movement to support lymphatic flow
- Education to promote confidence and independence in ongoing management
At Phoenix Pathways Recovery Clinic, CDT is tailored to each individual following a detailed assessment. Not all elements are required for every person, and treatment plans are adapted based on factors such as the severity of swelling, underlying health conditions, lifestyle, and personal goals.
For individuals with advanced illness, heart failure, or those in the palliative stage of care, CDT principles are applied sensitively and flexibly. In these situations, the focus is on comfort, symptom relief, and quality of life, rather than aggressive volume reduction.
Our aim through CDT is not only to manage swelling, but to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to feel confident in caring for your lymphatic health over the long term.
